Target Shopping a How To

I will tell you straight up that Target has been a little difficult for me. I have gotten some amazing deals but I have also dealt with a few cashiers and 1 Manager that weren't so coupon friendly.

What kind of coupons does Target Accept? Target issued coupons and Manufacturer coupons including internet Printables. (check out the Target coupon policy here)

What are Target issued coupons? Sometimes you will find "Target" coupons in news papers. They will have the Target symbol on them. Sometimes you will receive "Target" Coupons in the mail. You can also print "Target" coupons online here and here.

Is it true the Target coupons can only be used 1 per transaction? The coupons do state 1 per transaction, however, it really depends on the cashier or store Manager. So far I have never had a cashier refuse me to use more that 1 coupon at a time.

Can you really combine a Target Coupon and a Manufacturer's coupon? Yes you can! This is where the big savings can come in.

Recently I bought Skippy Peanut Butter for $2.04 a jar. I used $1 off Target coupons and 40cents off Manufacturer coupons to get the Peanut Butter for 64cents a jar.

You can check out a couple recent Target trips here and here.

Can I use my coupons on something that is on clearance or costs less than the amount of the coupon? Yes! As long as the item you are purchasing matches the wording on the coupon you can. According to the coupon policy above the cashier can adjust the coupon down to make the item free. I personally have had cashiers who adjusted the coupon and some who allow it to go through as is which gives you overage. I wouldn't expect the overage but be happy when you get it.

When I shop at Target or Walmart I choose my cashier carefully. If there happens to be a young guy cashier I will always go to him. Otherwise I look for a young girl. I have found many times the older cashiers think it is their duty to decide whether or not you should be able to use a coupon. I have experienced this and it wasn't so fun. Once you start couponing the stores often you will figure out which cashiers are the most coupon friendly.

Walgreens Shopping a How To

At Walgreens you can get a lot for very little as soon as you get their rules down. I found playing the Walgreen's game to be a little tricky at first.

***At Walgreens you do not need any type of loyalty card to do their deals.

Every week I check out Walgreen's weekly ad or I check out some great websites that have all the important deals listed. I can go to places like Hot Coupon World or A Full Cup and see the ad ahead of time. Then I can decide what are the deals that week that I am interested in.

I try to post my favorite deals on my blog at the beginning of the week. I also post coupon match-ups when applicable.

Every week you can earn Register Rewards by purchasing certain items. Register Rewards are basically Walgreen's money. You can use them to buy most anything except lottery tickets, gift cards and prescriptions.

Sometimes there are items that are Free after Register Reward. For example one of the deals this month has been Vaseline Sheer Infusion Lotion, buy for $6.99 and receive $6.99 back in Register Rewards.

Can you use a coupon for a item that produces a Register Reward? Yes you can!

There was an internet printable coupon for $1.50 off Vaseline Sheer Infusion Lotion. So you would pay $5.49 plus tax and get back $6.99 in Register Rewards. That is $1.50 money maker.

What do these Register Rewards look like?

Like this!

They are just a thin receipt like piece of paper with the amount on it as well as a bar code and some fine print.

Another way you can save at Walgreens is with in store coupons. Sometimes these are in the weekly ad or in a small pamphlet by the ads in the store. The great part about these in store coupons is that you can combine them with a manufacturers coupon.

For instance, in the ad this week there was an in store coupon for 2/$3 men's or women's Sure deodorant. I had coupons for both the men and women's deodorant. The men's coupons were $1.50 off 1 and the women's were $1 off 1.
So if I bought 2 mens and used the 2/$3 instore coupon and 2 $1.50 off coupons that is 2 sticks of deodorant for free. For the women's coupons it made the deodorant 50 cents a piece.

If I am buying an item that produces a Register Reward can I pay with a Register Reward? Yes!! As long as it is not a Register Reward for the same item.

For instance, let's say I bought the Vaseline Lotion and had a $6.99 Register Reward I could buy another item that produces a Register Reward and pay with $6.99 Vaseline RR. However I could not buy another Vaseline Lotion and pay with the Vaseline Lotion RR.

Here is the part that has been the hardest for me to get straight.....You must have as many items as you have Manufacturers Coupons! Register Rewards count as Manufacturers coupons. (this does not include the in store coupons)

So let's say you are buying 3 RR producing items and you have a coupon for each one and you have 2 Register Rewards you want to pay with you will need 2 filler items. I often look around the store for clearance items or items that are under 50cents to fill in these gaps.

You can go here to check out a trip that I made to Walgreen's. It includes details of how I purchased the items in the picture at this top of this post, how much each item cost, coupons I used and Register Rewards. You will see how I used fillers in order to be able to use all of my coupons.

Busy Weekend! Sleepover, Shopping and Fort Massac

We had a super busy weekend, hence no blogging since Friday. Hubby got home from his camping trip on Friday afternoon and I skipped my usual Friday shopping day. Then children by the dozens started coming to our home for a sleepover.

Alright not really dozens, 3 nephews (6,6 and 3) and 2 nieces (12, 6 and 1) came over. The 1 year old only stayed for a few hours and all the rest stayed all night. After they went home saturday morning I had to get my coupons prepared and then I went on my shopping trip. Emeri went with me and was recounting how many stores we went to that was under $5.

Then yesterday we headed to Fort Massac in Metropolis, Il. This is a tradition that my family has been doing since I was a child. We met my mom and stepdad along with sister and all the nieces and nephews.

We ate some delicious food! The kids had a blast playing in the forts in the above picture. They shopped for souvenirs. Both of my girls got a really cute blown glass necklace.

We hung out by the river and took lots of pictures of the kids having fun.

The part where the fun ends for me is that battle reinactment. I have a real problem with extremly loud noises and have since a child. I seriously feel like I am going to throw up. So around 20 til 3 my sister, mom and I took the baby and her 3 yr old son to the van far away from the battle. The other kids along with dad's and grandpa stayed back to watch. It's one of their favorite parts of the day.

Walmart Shopping a How To

Although I do not shop at Walmart like I used to I do still shop there. There are still some very good deals to be had but you have to pick and choose.

Sadly Walmart does not send out a weekly ad like most grocery stores do. So prices do tend to vary from store to store. I find often that items in my store will be higher than the Walmart 20 miles away from me. I think that is because my town is smaller.

One thing you can do to save money at WalMart is ad matching.

Walmart will match prices to any local competitors ad that are during the ad's active dates.

-They do not match buy 1 get one
-They do not match percent off

However they will match exact prices. If you are too busy to run around to multiple stores you can check out your local stores ads, plan your menu around the sales, then head to Walmart and price match the items you want. Be sure to use coupons to make your total cost even lower.

What kind of coupons does Walmart accept?
You can check out their corporate policy here

They accept manufacturer coupons and internet printable coupons.

Kroger a How to

Back when I used to do the one trip shopping spree at Walmart I almost never went to Kroger. For some reason I had it in my head that it was just too expensive.

When I switched to using coupons I began shopping more and more at Kroger and now I get the bulk of my groceries there.

Even without coupons I can stay well under budget at Kroger and I proved that this summer when I was too busy to do the coupon clipping.

If you focus on the sales and plan your weekly menu around it you will see the savings unfold. Most of Krogers sales beat out Walmart by far.

Another good tip is to check for Managers specials. You can find these all over the store. When an item gets put on Mgr Special it could be because they are changing the packaging or they are discontinuing the item or it is nearing it's sale by date.

Often times I get meats, breads and even milk on Mgr special. The meats and bread go in the freezer and the milk dosen't last around here a couple days anyway.

So how can coupons maximize your shopping at Kroger?

Matching the items on sale at Kroger with a coupon can make an already low price even lower.

Here's an example:

This week Kroger has been doing the Mega Event where you buy 10 select items and get $5 off automatically at checkout.

I bought

8 Green Giant Valley Fresh steamers @ $1.99 each
2 Healthy Choice Meals @ $2.19 each

I used 6 50cent off Green Giant coupons that doubled to $1 and 2 40cent off coupons that doubled to 80 cents.

I also used 1 $2 off Healthy Choice Coupon.

Then I got $5 off for buying 10 Mega Items and paid $5.70 for the 10 items.

For my local readers, Kroger in southern Illinois double coupons up to 50 cents. Also make sure to have the cashier scan your Kroger card before any items are scanned to ensure that all of your coupons will double.

Here is one more way that you can maximize your savings at Kroger.

Clipless coupons. What are clipless coupons? They are coupons that you put directly on your Kroger card. There are 3 different companies that I use and they are easy to set up. You just go to their site, make an account and add your kroger card. Once your Kroger card is added you can select what coupons you want on your card. The coupons will be added to your card and when your card is scanned during a transaction the coupon will automatically go on your order to match the item you have purchased.

Homemade Blueberry Muffins

My hubby has been asking for blueberry muffins so when I shopped last week I made sure to buy some frozen blueberries.

Yesterday I found this recipe here for basic blueberry muffins and whipped some up.

The only substitution I made was 1/4 cup applesauce instead of oil. Next time I will probably use 3/4 cup sugar instead of 1/2 cup. They are perfectly fine with the half cup but I think they could be just a little sweeter.

On days that I am busy instead of actually scooping out the batter into a muffin tin I will pour it all into a greased square pan and then cut into bars. This recipe made 16 square bars.

A Coupon How To

How did I start couponing?

For about a year or so I was trying to make extra money online. During all that time I never thought about making more of our money. Then in August 2008 the light bulb went on and I realized instead of making more money, I just needed to use our money differently. I started this blog and my journey began. It took me a while to learn and I have made numerous mistakes along the way, but I have made a big change in how we live and spend.

Where do I get my coupons?

The Sunday paper - For my local readers the St. Louis Post Dispatch is what I buy. It is way better than the Southern Illinoisan.

Magazines - a lot of magazines are having coupons inside these days. All You is one that has a quite a bit of coupons every month. However I do not pay or pay very much for magazines, I have gotten a lot of free or very low priced subscriptions online.

The internet - Coupons.com, Smartsource.com, redplum.com

Sometimes I buy them online - Technically you can't buy them, you just pay the other person for their time to sort and cut them out. Ebay and Coupon Dede are the sources I use most.

How many Sunday papers do I buy?

Typically I purchase 3 Sunday papers, on a rare occassion I buy 4.

How do I sort my coupons?

Sorting the coupons is something I haven't really decided on. I do have a large Five Star zippered binder. Inside it has folders as well as baseball card holders. Sometimes I get all my coupons clipped and organized in the card holders and other times I keep the inserts together. I still haven't decided which works best for me.

What will I be discussing in future posts?
