Kroger Shopping 8/21

The past few days have been a little crazy. I planned to get this up already but I got a nasty virus on my laptop. The virus shut off my anti virus and then they put a key logger on my machine. Whats worse I had noticed my machine running slow for about the past week and didn't really tell my husband who is a computer programmer and he could have possible saved us some trouble. Needless to say the key logger got me paying a bill and typing in all the info to my debit card so they made charge to my card on Thursday. So the moral of this story is, if you notice your computer acting hinky......tell your husband immediately!! Don't wait until maybe someone is stealing your money.

So today I am using hubby's laptop just to try and get caught up. He is working on mine as we speak, trying to find out exactly where or how I got the virus.

I cannot find my receipt for Kroger but you can click the picture above and it will enlarge it.

This week I shopped for all the items I needed for Jonah's weekend birthday bash!

Total Spent $78.29

Dinner in a Flash: Burritos

I had taken a picture of the ingredients before hand but managed to delete it.

Last week we had some yummy burritos. Here is what I used:

1 pkg Knorr Taco Rice
1 can Red Beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 pkg Butterball Turkey Kielbasa
1 can corn
1 can rotel
1 pkg soft shell tortillas

I chopped up the turkey kielbasa and started by browning it in the pan. Once the meat was browned I added in the ingredients to make the rice. I brought it to a boil, reduced the heat and covered. When the rice was fully cooked I added in the drained and rinsed beans, the drained corn and the rotel and cooked until heated through. We put the filling on warm tortillas and topped it with just a little ranch dressing.

This was really good and filling and it made way more for our 4 than we needed. The rotel made it a little spicy so changing the rotel to diced tomatoes would be a great option.

Hubby loved the spicy factor, the only thing he didn't like was the corn. He asked me to please omit it next time. The girls and I liked the corn, so it is just a matter of taste.

This meal was so fast and easy. You could also substitute the Turkey Kielbasa with ground beef, ground turkey, shredded chicken or go meatless!

Saving on Water Consumption

This morning I came across Bargain Babe which is not one of my normal daily bloggy reads. Her blog gave me confirmation that moving to a dishwasher was definitely best for our household.

Due to loads upon loads of dishes we had many arguements in our home, it seemed like the kitchen took an eternity to get clean and well it just plain stressed me out.

I had worried about the energy and water consumption of the new dishwasher but finally decided that sometimes things have to give in order to help my sanity.

Check out this video that Bargain Babe led me to on Wallet Pop.

Cheap All Small and Mighty at Walmart

Yesterday while out shopping with my mom and sisters we ran into Walmart. (In Marion for local readers) On the general merchandise door side they had their usual shelves stocked with roll back items. Their was one large section of All Small and Mighty.

They were bonus bottles with 25% more making them 40 loads and they were on roll back for $3.49. The best part was that they all had hang tags on them for $1 off. So they were $2.49 each.

Even though I have several bottles of detergent in the basement I went ahead and grabbed 4.

Please remember that Walmarts prices vary so some of you may find it more expensive, less expensive or not even have it at your store at all.

Arby's Dinner for 4 Coupons

Have you checked your mailbox lately?

At the end of last week we got a couple fliers in the mail and along with them was one sheet of Arby's coupons. I figured I better check them out closely. There were 2 awesome coupons that were identical.

for $9.99 you get:
4 Small Drinks
4 Regular Roast Beef
4 Curly Fries

The coupon doesn't expire until 9/6.

We went Saturday night, see Jonah above outside Arby's. With tax it cost us $10.71. Not bad at all. They also let me keep the coupon. So tomorrow when me, my mom and sister have our day out we will be eating at Arby's.

So you may want to double check any coupons or fliers you have gotten in the mail recently. You can find some great restaurant coupons that way.

Review and Giveaway: Fiber One 50 Calorie Yogurt Gift Pack

Thanks to my friends at MyBlogSpark we had the opportunity to try out the new Fiber One 50 Calorie yogurt and now you can too! We received this great gift pack above, my girls were totally loving the fork/spoon/knife combo. Here you have all the items you need to be able to pack a nice healthy lunch. For the yogurt we tried the strawberry because strawberry is a favorite in the house. Everyone loved it. Even the girls. It is nice and creamy and really good for only 50 calories.

Best-selling author and food expert Lisa Lillien, AKA Hungry Girl, has given her "seal of approval" to the new Fiber One yogurt, the only leading nonfat yogurt with 50 calories and 5 grams of fiber (20 percent of the Recommended Daily Value). It is also a good source of calcium and vitamins A and D, making this an all-around great choice for dieters and those watching their weights. Each cup includes the creamy, delicious taste you expect from Yoplait, and you don't have to feel guilty about enjoying it. Fiber One is available in a variety of flavors including, Strawberry, Peach, Vanilla and Key Lime Pie

I, thanks to MyBlogSpark, will be giving the above gift pack to 3 readers. You will receive a Fiber One yogurt VIP coupon (good for a free 4-pack of Fiber One yogurt), cooler pack, and other storage items for you to carry your snacks and yogurt- it's great for work and other on-the-go activities!

Once I signed up all I did was go to the small tool bar in the upper right hand corner of my screen. I clicked on the drop down box on the left side and changed it to Swag Bucks. Voila!

Now every time I need to do a search, I use that tool bar. Easy as pie.

Dinner in a Flash: Tuna Fettucine

I have a big confession....I don't always cook a huge meal!

Alright if you have read this blog very often I am sure you have figured that out already. Sometimes I cook big and sometimes I cook what is easiest and sometimes I don't cook at all.

After stocking up this week on Knorr sides for only 50cents a package I thought maybe I should give you guys some ideas on what I do with those types of food.

When I can find a sale on Knorr Sides, Zatarains or Uncle Bens sides I buy them. Rather than just being a side they can be the base to "Dinner in a Flash".

Tonight you can see by the pic above that we are having Knorr Fettucine Alfredo.
(for reference we have a family of 4)

2 pkgs Knorr Fettucine
1 can tuna

Tonight we went real basic, I cooked the fettucine per the package directions. I used skim milk and a little bit of parkay. As it was cooking I drained and flaked a can of tuna. Voila!

Normally I prefer to get some kind of a veggie in here but we ate late and I was in a hurry.

Hear are some other ways we use the Knorr Fettucine.

1. Instead of tuna add shredded chicken.
2. Add frozen broccoli to the Tuna Fettucine or Chicken Fettucine.
3. Add peas to the Tuna Fettucine or Chicken Fettucine.

Stayed tuned for more "Dinner in a Flash" recipes.

What is your super simple go to recipe?

Saving Money By Doing it Yourself: Refurbishing Old Furniture

Many times over the years I have repurposed old furniture in order to make them fit into a new decor or just to make them look presentable.

I have painted/stained old cabinets, dressers, book shelves, wall shelves, tables and chairs and even picture frames.

More recently in our new house there is a lot of I have been doing to change things. Our new house is actually an old house that was owned by a little old lady. Although the house was soundly built, had all new windows, new wiring, and a roof and central air system that aren't too many years old the entire interior looked like a little old lady.

I have been slowly going through each room redecorating and remodeling. There is still a lot to do. Here are some pieces of furniture that I have recently been working on to fit in with new color schemes.

I wrote on the previous post about our neutral bedroom. Although it is neutral I wanted to add in just a bit of color.

This lingerie dresser was given to us by my MIL. It was a creamy white and discolored. It was old and desperately needed a new coat of paint. So I primed it and painted the base of the dresser the same color as the walls. Once it dried I put on a coat of shellac, giving it a sheen and making the color look a shade darker than the walls.

As for the drawers I painted them all in the accent color.

The computer desk is not completed yet. It was originally a child side desk from my sisters bedroom at home. It has a hutch-like book shelf that attaches to the top. I removed it and put it in my basement. I removed the old hardware, sanded it and painted it a nice neutral color. I also put 2 layers of shellac on the deck top because this is the computer my girls use and I knew they would scratch the top up other wise.

I am still trying to find drawer pulls that match the ones I bought for the Entertainment Center.

My girls share a bedroom. We have a full basement but it is not finished, it is something we are looking at doing but for now they need a comfy place to live and sleep.

They have bunkbeds in their room and a small dresser. The small amount of toys my younger daughter has are kept in the closet. They needed something to house their tv, dvd's, books and cds. I had actually started shopping around trying to find something to buy. Tall and slim was what we needed. Little did I know the answer was in our basement all along.

When we move here there was this tall brown old fashioned cigarette vending machine. Aka, the tall now purple shelf. When you turn this shelf around it had slots for the cigarettes.

Anyway, I measured it and it was perfect. I had hubby bring it up. I cleaned it up really good and then painted it to match in their purple room. Once painted I also put 2 coats of shellac on to seal the paint good.

All of the above pieces of furniture were free to me. A little elbow grease and some paint later they are pieces that fit into our home.

There is still a lot of work I have to do in this home for it to be completed. The kitchen hasn't even been started and nearly every room still has some small projects I have lined up.

Doing things yourself can take longer but the reward is great.

Walmart Shopping 8/8 *Free Tide Trial Size*

This was my first week back to really hit the stores around and check out all the deals. I have been living mainly off the stockpile this summer and just buying necessities.

The time off gave me a new found enjoyment for snatching up some deals. Although my coupon stash is still very low since I only bought coupons twice this summer I am sure it will build back up fast. I did get 4 papers last Sunday and I have been getting some good online printables.

Jonah and I made one last trip today to Walmart. We picked up the school supplies shown as well as an undergarment for Emeri on clearance for $3. Also taking my child with me always involves drink or snack. So she got a drink and snack.

The 4 Tide Samples were free. I used $1 off Any Tide from the 8/2 Proctor and Gamble

The small skintimates were $1.47 and I used $1 off Any Skintimate from the 8/2 Smartsource (I think) getting them for 47cents each.

The Bic pens were free. I used a $1 off Bic Ball Pen or Gel printable that I can't seem to find now.

Total Spent = $15.88

Note: read your coupons wording carefully! When coupons do not specify a size or exclude trials it is always beneficial to look for the smallest size possible. I noticed there were a couple more items in the 8/2 paper that didn't have specified sizes and I will probably go back later and get the trial sizes. Be aware that some cashiers will not want to let you use these, they think it is their God given right to be the coupon police. When I went to Walmart a great cashier. I usually try first to look for a younger guy, if I can't find one then I look for a younger girl. Good Luck!

Kroger Shopping 8/8 *Grocery Time*

As fun as it was hitting up the deals this week at CVS and Walgreen's I had to pick up some groceries too. I didn't take a picture of my Kroger run it was anything special.

I bought;
bread, milk, juice, lemonade, eggs, cheese, fruit, steaks on mgr special, toilet paper, paper towels, canned tomatoes, bag of long grain rice, tuna, cooking spray, sliced turkey, and a few other things

I also got a free box of Rice Krispies (coupon from Vocal Point)
2 free 4pks of Fiber one Yogurt (coupons from Pssst)
and a free pint of Starbucks Caramel Macchiato Icecream (coupon from a Facebook promotion)

The total I spent was right at $40, I can't seem to find my receipt at the moment.

CVS Shopping 8/8 *Free Electrasol*

Jonah and I ran into CVS hoping that they had gotten some more Electrasol. Low and behold they had 5, exactly what I needed.

5 Electrasol Dish washer detergent @ $4.50 each (spend $20 and earn $10 ECB)

used 5 -$2.50 Electrasol Coupons

used $9.97 Extra Care Bucks

Total Spent $1.61 and earned $10 Extra Care Bucks

There are so many small things you can do to make a big impact in your home. Things that cost you very little to no money. By starting small you will learn and once you start to accomplish small things it will give you the courage to try harder things. Before you know you will be doing things around the house that you may have normally called someone in to do.

First off, things like deep cleaning, de-cluttering and rearranging a room can often make things look brand new again. All of these things anyone can do.

A fresh coat of paint or hanging new curtains can totally change the look of a room.

Here is a list of the do it yourself things I have done over the years. Some are small things and some are not so small. Over series of posts I will be discussing how I accomplished these things.
  • painting
  • changing switchplate covers
  • putting up a new light fixture (indoor/outdoor)
  • putting up a new ceiling fan
  • refurbishing old furniture
  • sewing simple curtains
  • painting old picture frames to match a new room or new decor
  • sewing simple throw pillows
  • building an extra wide gate for an extra wide door way
  • tarred a trailer roof
  • torn up and put down carpet
  • refinished a hard wood floor
  • put down linoleum floor
  • put up a new ceiling
  • put in a wall unit/closet organizing system
  • not to mention putting together about 10 zillion pieces of furniture/toys/etc.
One of the most simple things you can do to change the entire look of a room is to paint it. If you paint yourself you are only out the cost of supplies. If you are not super picky about the color you can even find discounted paint. When my sister bought a house a couple of months ago she had to paint every room before moving in. We went to Walmart and she picked a specific color for her living room and that was mixed. Then we went to the shelf of discounted paint and found paint for every other room that was half off. This is paint that didn't come out exactly like the paint swatch when they mixed it. She saved a ton of money that way. You will find that most home stores also have a section for discounted paint. I have seen them at Home Depot and at Lowes

I like to find picture frames at yardsales for next to nothing, then you can bring them home and paint them to match the rest of your decor.

For instance the picture of Jonah below is in a 5X7 frame that was originally a shiny gold color. I have the same frame for a picture of Emeri too. In our bathroom at our old house I need them to be silver. So I spray painted them both and then rubbed in just a bit of stain, let it set for a minute then wiped it clean. Some was left behind in the crevices which toned down the super silvery color.

I have done this type of thing to picture frames many times and it always looks nice on the wall.

Another great way to get cheap picture frames is clearance!

(Sorry the below pic is at such a weird angle)

The pictures below are on my bedroom wall. The walls have paneling underneath and were painted peach and had floral borders all over the place when we moved here. I stripped down the borders and painted a nice neutral color on the walls.

I got these frames at WalMart, they were on clearance because during shuffling around at the store the white paint had been lightly scratched up. To me honestly I liked them fine just the way they were. It makes them look a little distressed which is fine with me. I paid 75cents a frame.

Then I came home and looked through the digital camera at some of the outdoor pics my hubby had taken. After I chose 4 I printed them out on regular printer paper on grayscale. I really love them on the wall and hubby loves having his art work displayed.

There are so many things you can do with paint. I have only just touched on a few. Paint is a very inexpensive way to make changes to your home and you can definitely do it yourself.

In the next post I will be talking about refurbishing old furniture pieces.

Being a Do-It-Yourselfer Can Save You Some Dough

Do you have any really cool things you have done with paint around your house? If so I would love to see pictures. Leave a comment with a link to your post.
