Kraft Salad Dressing for 8 Cents at WalMart

A lot of times when I see deals online for Wal Mart I am disappointed that my local store never seems to have the same items or prices. This time I can confirm it is true!
Today I was in Marion Wal Mart and they do have the 16oz bottles of Kraft Dressing for $1.58. Use the $1.50/1 Kraft Dressing coupon from yesterday's Smart source insert and you will get Kraft Dressing for 8 cents!

Reportedly this price is good at a large amount of Wal Marts.

Free Mentos Gum at Walgreens

If you happen to have any of those $1 off Mentos Gum coupons left then now is the time to use them. Right now at Walgreens the fruity flavors of Mentos gum are on sale $2/2. Back in the 3/1 Smart source there were coupons for $1 off 1 package of Mentos Gum making these babies free! I had 10 coupons so today I got 10 packs of gum for free.

(Just wanted to note: at my local store you actually had to buy 2 of them to get the $2/2 price. The first one rang at $1.49 and the second for 51cents)

On another Walgreens note, my hubby talked to a Co-Worker who went to the Marion Walgreens to do the Pepsi deal and our Walgreens does not consider Dr Pepper a Pepsi Product. I am glad that I didn't plan to do this deal because I would have just assumed Dr Pepper was a part of the deal. Last time CVS did a Pepsi deal our local CVS included Dr P in it.

Cooking with Emeri: African Pineapple Peanut Stew

Tonight we are Cooking with Emeri!

On the menu is African Pineapple Peanut Stew.
I will admit I would have never ever picked this recipe. I am really not one for mixing fruit in my dinner meal. Also before tonight I had never tasted Kale before so I know my girls hadn't either.

However I am pretty much giving the girls creative freedom to choose whatever they want to make. The only exception would be using any ingredients that someone in the house has a serious aversion to. For instance: No Mushrooms!! :)

Here are most of our ingredients. I forgot to set the rice up there. We cooked up some white rice to go with the Stew.

She got the recipe from recipezaar and followed it except for the garnish.

* 1 cup onion, chopped
* 2 garlic cloves, minced
* 1 tablespoon olive oil
* 4-5 cups kale or swiss chard (1 bunch)
* 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, undrained
* 1/2 cup natural-style peanut butter
* 2 tablespoons soy sauce
* 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped
* 1 teaspoon sea salt, celtic (more or less to taste)
* 1/2 cup peanuts, skinless, crushed (more or less for garnish)
* 3 scallions, chopped (more or less for garnish)

First she chopped up the onion. Then added it to the pot with the olive oil and she used minced garlic.

You can actually see the steam in the picture. She sauteed the onions and minced garlic until it was soft.

Next she added in the can of crushed pineapple with liquid and stirred it in. While this came to a simmer she washed and chopped the Kale.

Then she added the Kale to the pot, stirred it a bit and put the vented lid on top. She set the time for 5 minutes to let the Kale begin to get tender.

After the 5 minutes was up she added in the peanut butter, soy sauce and cilantro and stirred it in. Covered it once again with the vented lid and set the timer for 5 more minutes. When the 5 minutes was up she stirred it up one last time. Then plated it on top of a bed of white rice.

So what was the verdict?
I have to actually say it was a lot better than I expected. I don't think it will move to my top 10 recipes but I am glad Emeri gave it a try.
My husband LOVED it!! He told Emeri it was so good he wanted her to make it especially for him on his birthday!!
Emeri also really enjoyed it and of course she was quite proud that it came out so well.
Jonah lucked out and happened to be gone when we had it. She wasn't looking forward to it.

Emeri did great, I didn't have to really do anything other than explain a few things to her.

New Series: Cooking with My Kids

Most of you know by now that I have two wonderful daughters ages 10 and 13. My girls can make most any convenience food but I haven't really taken the opportunity to teach them to cook. What I have been waiting on I am not sure but the other day I got inspired while reading The Happy Housewife! I decided it was about time I got of my duff and started training my girls in areas that will be very important down the road. Eventually they will be wives and mothers and I would really hate for them to have to serve pizza rolls and chicken nuggets to their families day in and out!! :)

There will be 2 installments per week.
Cooking with Emeri! (my 13yr old)
and
Cooking with Jonah! (my 10yr old)

How will this work?
Before I head out for my friday shopping trip the girls each choose a recipe they want to cook for the next week so I can shop for the ingredients.

How is this going to service our family?
1) I will have one night per week per child to work together on a one on one basis
2) it will give the girls a goal to achieve and a sense of self worth
3) it will give me a break 2 nights a week from having to decide what to eat
4) it will get us out of the rut of eating the same thing every week

I can only see that this will be a very positive experience. Last night was the first night and Emeri cooked, I mostly just guided. Later tonight I will be posting about the experience along with pictures and recipe. I hope you will join us!

Review: Jerky.com Pineapple Jerky

Our family of 4 loves to snack! I have two daughters 10 and 13 who seem to be in constant snacking mode and a husband who packs his lunch and snacks to take to work with him every day. We love yogurt and granola bars but sometimes a change of pace is wonderful.

I received an email from one of the great guys at Jerky.com offering to allow our family to try out a brand new snack: Pineapple Jerky!

So what is Pineapple Jerky? Is it like dried fruit?
The answer to that is NO! I do not like dried fruit and this was nothing at all like it.

Pineapple Jerky consists of slices of pinepple grown on the island of Maui that are dehydrated and drizzled with honey. The complete ingredient list is Pineapple and honey. That's it!

I don't know about you but it is very important to me that the majority of my girls snacks are healthy and this jerky definitely fits the bill.

So How did we like it?
All four of us loved it!! Our samples were devoured very quickly. The pineapple was so delicious, sweet but not too sweet. The drizzle of honey really complimented the flavor of the pineapple. It was a lot more flavorful that we had anticipated and there was no doubt that this jerky was made from fresh pineapple.

What else can you find at Jerky.com?
Beef Jerky, Venison Jerky, Elk Jerky, Turkey Jerky, Buffalo Jerky, Ostrich Jerky and Bacon Jerky.
Here is what I find really wonderful about their products: no preservatives, no nitrites, no msg and you can actually pronounce all of the ingredients. Check out their nutrition facts to see for yourself.

How can you purchase Pineapple Jerky? You can order online at Jerky.com and most of their items include free shipping.

Save 10% on Lowe's Purchase up to $5,000

If you are like me and in the middle of home remodel then this coupon at Lowe's will make your day. Just head to Lowes.com and fill out a short form and your coupon will be sent to you via email within 3-7 days.

The coupon is good for 10% off one single purchase up to $5,000 for a maximum savings of $500.

Kroger: $25 Transferred Prescription Until 3/31

If you have not done this yet you have just a few more days to get in there! Until March 31st you can get $25 added to your Kroger Loyalty Card. Apparently this is not valid every where. So you may want to call your pharmacy before you head over there. Also in some areas coupons were actually sent out to customers.

In my area however, at the beginning of the month there was an ad on the front of the Kroger flier. All you need to do is head to the Kroger pharmacy and have a prescription transferred (and purchase the meds) and they will add $25 to your Kroger card.

Now I can only confirm this at the Marion, Il. Kroger. This is were I did my transfer.

Once the $25 is added to your card you can use it to buy groceries!

Walgreen's Woes

I posted my shopping trip for 3/13-3/19 a couple days ago. After my very first trip to Walgreen's I stated that it was a hideous trip and I would post about it later. Well later has come.

I think I have told you before my closest Walgreens is in Big Town which is 20 miles away. Now I am always in Big Town on Sunday for church, Tuesday for my family day with Mom and Sis and on most weeks Friday for shopping day. So of course I plan my Walgreen's trips according to the days I will be in Big Town!

There are a few wonderful cashiers there who are super nice, very helpful and are very coupon friendly. Then there is an older lady who has some kind of a foreign accent who isn't so coupon friendly. No offense to older ladies with foreign accents just wanted to describe her for local readers who may want to steer clear of her line.

Anyway, a month or so ago I had an issue in her line where none of my items rang up what they were marked on the shelf. She refused to even see if I was right then refused to use my coupons. So I told her to forget it and she told me I could go to the make-up counter. So I left with no merchandise.

This time I was going in mainly for the diaper deal for my sister but I still had coupons left for the other deals they had going on. Like the glade and the garnier. Now I had already done the deals earlier on in the week and I knew everything rang up right so I figured it would be okay to go through her line (she was the only cashier there).

So I went up and I had a quite a few items and lots of coupons. For the Walgreen's IVC's I had 2 Glade Impressions, 2 Glade Sense & Spray and 2 Garniers. First of all she literally stood there and studied all of my coupons. Each and every one and she sat them on the counter in 2 stacks. I just stood there and smiled. She then started ringing all of my items except my 2 Garniers and the 2 Glade Sense and Spray. Next she started taking off my coupons and when she got to my $4 Glade Sense and Spray it wouldn't work because she hadn't even rang it up yet.

By this point there were 2 more customers standing behind me waiting. So she turns to me and says "You can't use these coupons" and hands me the Glade coupons. So I politely hold up the Glade coupon and say "Sure I can, this coupon is for this item" I try to show her the picture and point to the Glade still sitting on the counter. She repeats herself, "No you cannot use those coupons". Once again I say "This coupon goes to this item right here, you just need to ring it up". At which point she takes the coupon from my hand and says "Would you like me to show you?", she scans the coupon and it beeps (cuz she still hasn't rang up the item) and says "See, you cannot not use this coupon, you haven't bought this item, the computer dosen't lie!?"

I am getting very upset at this point but trying really hard not to look like it! So one last plea I say "All you have to do is ring up the Glade then try the coupon, I promise it will work. You just haven't rang it up yet." So she looks at me and smiles and then finally rings up the glade then she scans the coupons and low and behold they go through. The she looks at me and says, "See there was no reason for you to get upset now was there?"

Uggh, I am getting mad now because I have seriously been nothing but polite and as soft spoken as I could be. Left on the counter are the 2 Garnier. So she says "You can only have one of those! The coupon says only one!". I say fine and she gives me my total. I pay and then stand there knowing I am getting a couple register rewards.

She hands me my receipt and says "Have a nice day", then turns to start ringing up the next lady. So I stand there and say that I have RR's coming. A $1 rr comes out and she hands it to me and says "I said, Have a nice day". So I say " I have a $10 RR coming for the diaper deal". She then gives me a look and sighs gets the RR and hands it to me and says "Like I told you, Have a nice day". But she wasn't saying it nicely at all!

I left and I was soooooooooooo mad!!! If you could have only seen all the looks and the eye rolls she was giving me in front of customers behind me. I am not a person who stands up for myself very well. But I had been in that store for a long time picking out all that stuff and matching the coupons and I wanted it.

After I calmed down I called the store manger who was super nice. I just told him how she treated me and how horrible she made me feel. I was very calm and soft spoken with him as I was with her above but I knew it was very important not to let my anger get the best and make a fool of myself. Anyway, I told him that I will never go through her line again. Then after I told him about all the bad stuff I went on to brag to him about my very favorite cashier there and how wonderful and helpful she is to me.

So that trip really sucked and I am not kidding when I say I will never go through her lane again!

Fiber One Yogurt Fiber Friend Face Off Giveaway

This giveaway is closed. Thanks to all who participated.

We are a family that loves yogurt! We go through it like crazy around here so I was thrilled when MyBlogSpark gave us the opportunity to try out the new Yoplait Fiber One Yogurt.

On my journey to lose weight I try very hard to keep plenty of snacks around that are high in fiber. Fiber will keep you fuller longer and will help sustain you until that next meal.

We have tried a few of the Fiber One products. We really like the Fiber One granola bars, especially the Chocolate and Oats. I am always on the lookout for coupons for these guys and I stock up when they are on sale. They are really delicious, almost like a candy bar but much more filling. We also love the Fiber One Toaster Pastries. They are all delicious but the Brown Sugar and Cinnamon are my favorite. I also feel much better about my girls having these for breakfast on a hurried morning than I do plain old pop tarts.

This was our first chance to try the yogurt. I purchased the strawberry and it was a huge hit. It is very creamy and smooth and dosen't really taste like it is "good for you" food. I was lucky the kids let me have 1! :) We will definitely be buying the yogurt again.

Are you getting enough fiber in your daily diet? If you are not sure you can head on over and take the Fiber Friend Face Off. This is really cute!

While there you can create your own personal avatar, or Fiber Friend. You then face off against a weekly opponent to help learn about daily fiber requirements and the health benefits of fiber. Just by registering, players are entered in a sweepstakes for a chance to win great prizes including daily gift cash cards, weekly Flip Video camcorder and a grand prize trip-for-two to a luxury spa in Arizona.

Here are health benefits of fiber that I found on the Fiber One website:

Digestive Health

* The most recognized benefit of fiber is its important role in keeping the digestive system running smoothly by promoting regularity. Fiber adds bulk to help move food through the digestive tract.
* Along with regular exercise and plenty of water, fiber plays an important part in maintaining digestive health.

Heart Health

* Fiber – specifically soluble fiber – may also help lower blood cholesterol levels, thereby reducing the risk for heart disease. Fiber appears to lower cholesterol by interfering with its absorption in the digestive tract.

Diabetes

* Fiber may also be important for people who have diabetes. Diets high in whole grain and fiber have been shown to help people with diabetes manage their blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Weight Management

* Getting enough fiber can also help curb your hunger and help you feel satisfied, which can help with weight management. Research suggests that people who have higher intakes of fiber tend to have healthier body weights.
* High fiber foods, like Fiber One cereal and Fiber One Honey Clusters®, may help with managing caloric intake.

The giveaway:

Thanks to MyBlogSpark three of my readers will be receiving the Fiber One Yogurt Prize Pack. This includes: a coupon to try a complimentary 4-pack of Fiber One yogurt and a Fiber Friend gift basket, which includes a nutrition journal, water bottle, pedometer with calorie counter, and a kitchen scale.

How Can You Win:
First of all you must have a U.S. address!

Subscribe Via Email

For those of you who had subscribed to my original weekly newsletter I apologize that one hasn't went out in 3 or 4 weeks. With life being turned upside down around here and my nieces living here for a month I got so behind on everything. The newsletter was just something I couldn't keep up with.

At any rate I just figured out how to set email subscriptions via feedburner. So for any of you who would like to sign up for that please feel free.

On another note, I have been under the weather today running fever so I didn't get a couple postings done I had planned. Hopefully tomorrow I will get a giveaway posted as well as my shopping trip for 3/13 through 3/19.

I had lots of multiple coupons but it is my preference not to clear the shelves so I just got a little each time I was there. :)

Is WalMart No Longer For Me?

This is the question I asked myself last week as I was trying to see if I could get any deals there!

Just about 9 months ago I was a WalMart only gal. I was all about the one stop shopping. I would set out on payday with my so called budget. I would "allow" myself $250 to spend for groceries and hba. Almost always on day one of payday I would at least spend the full amount of the $250 and usually exceed it. I never clipped coupons and I would just wander around WalMart putting things in my cart until I could no longer push it well. That meant it was time to go home! :)

After I returned home I would begin remembering things we actually needed as opposed to everything I bought. Then I would end up heading to WalMart a few more times before the next payday. I almost always spent about $600 a month on all groceries/hba even though my written budget was $500 a month. With that $600 I had no extras. I ran out of stuff all the time, and had zero back up of anything in the house.

Since June I started couponing and have changed my budget to $400 a month for groceries and hba. I am almost always under plus I am starting to get a decent stockpile. We have also been giving a lot of extras to family members and have donated to a couple of organizations.
We have way more than we used to have and spend way less!

Now back to my original question to myself. Is WalMart no longer for me?
Every week as I shop I buy less and less at WalMart and more at other stores. I can never find any of the deals for WalMart that are listed on a lot of blogs.

So as I went last week to try and cash in on some of the deals I had found listed on numerous blogs, I was quite disappointed. I did not find a single one of the deals I had read about. I am starting to feel like my only reason for going to WalMart is to get my free Redbox movies!

What about you guys.....are you still WalMart shoppers?? Do you EVER find any good deals there??
