Sale at Bath and Body Works

I am a Bath and Body Works fanatic. I have many B&B Sprays and lotions in my cabinet. I just love walking by the store and smelling it.

Right now the Bath and Body Room Sprays are on sale for $3 and as you can see they have brought in the fall scents. Creamy Nutmeg, Pumpkin and Leaves. The sale is for a limited time so you better get yours while you can.

I am looking forward to my bday in less than two weeks so I can buy their brand new Black Amethyst in the spray and the lotion. (I get money from my mom and usually stock up on myfavorite scents) It is to die for!! Last week when shopping with my mom and sis we tried on the lotion and I LOVED it!!

In my book a girl can never have enough B&B products.

Super Cool Picture Layouts for Free

I got an email today from my best girlfriend urging me to check out imikimi.com They are a free site, there is one download you have to do to use their services. They have free layouts for myspace and facebook or you can create your own. There are tons of cool things you can do with photos.

You can make really cool collages like the ones below. It is really easy! You search through ones that have been made by other people, choose the one you want and then you can customize it to your needs. If you are really brave you can try and create your own.

You can also print out your picture collages on photo paper. I know when we went to JcPenney the beginning of this summer to get the below pics taken, they had some cute collages but wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to have 3 pictures in it.

Homemade Fabric Softener

Well I made my first batch of homemade fabric softener this weekend. I have been using homemade laundry soap for about a month now and I am not looking back. I am actually still on this first batch I made. The only thing I have added to my laundry soap is some peppermint essential oil. The lady at the healthfood store said that she adds Dr Bronners Peppermint Liquid Castile Soap to her laundry. For my next batch of laundry soap I will be using Dove soap instead of Ivory.

Okay, as for the fabric softener....this is so easy!!

Ingredients
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 6 cups distilled white vinegar
  • 8 cups water
  • your favorite essential oil, I bought lavender. The recipe called for 10-15 drops, I used more like 20. But if you get a small dropper 20 drops dosen't even make a dent in your bottle.

Directions

  1. You will need a one gallon container.
  2. First add the baking soda to the plastic container.
  3. Next add 1 cup of water to start with.
  4. Slowly add the vinegar to the bottle as the vinegar and baking soda will start to fizz.
  5. Then add the rest of the water swirling around & cover venting the top a few times.
  6. Last add the essential oil.
  7. Add 1 cup in your final rinse cycle for each load but give the bottle a good shake to stir up the essential oil if using.
I have been using this for a few days now and am quite pleased. It makes approx 45 loads for under $1.

What to Do With 7 Bags of Chex Mix?

After my Walgreens shopping trip I came home with 7 bags of Chex original flavor. Well my girls immediately took off with one bag. As for the other I decided to make homemade 100 calorie packs.

100 calorie packs are hot commodities. My girls love them, my hubby loves them, heck even I love them. They are a convenient little snack and they keep you from scarfing the whole bag.

Most 100 calories packs are at least $2.50 for 6 pkgs or 41 1/2 cents per package.

So for ours we took the 6 bags of Chex and 1 bag of Hershey's Milk Chocolate Chips. ($1.98)
I added 1/3 cups choc chips to each bag of Chex, shook it up well and then divided into 1/2 cup portions. Each portion was put into a snack size bag. Each bag of Chex made 9 100 calorie packs.

Our homemade 100 calorie packs cost $1.25 for 9 pkgs or 13.8 cents per package.

Our 6 bags of Chex made 54 100 calorie packs.....not bad!

So now I am thinking of all the ways I can make our own individual snacks for less.

  • make your own mini cookies or muffins
  • homemade trail mix
  • repackage your own favorite chips or crackers
  • repackage your own favorite candies
Make or buy the bigger packages and then divide them up. They are great for lunches or grabbing a snack on the go.

Save Money While Packing your Child's Lunch

My girls have always packed their lunches except for pizza day. But up until this year I had been very wasteful. Here are the changes I have made.
Instead of buying tons of juice boxes- we got these clear and grey Rubbermaid drink containers. They are spillproof and great! So now they take water, juice, koolaid or lemonade. No containers to throw away every day and less money.

Instead of putting sandwiches in plastic baggies- I purchased reusable sandwich containers. (not pictured). No more constant plastic waste!
Instead of buying fruit cups such as Dole - I have purchased several small containers which I can add some canned fruit, applesauce, or some veggies. Alot cheaper this way.

Instead of buying individual chips, cookies or snacks - Buy the bigger packages of chips, cookies and such that your childs likes. Divide them into snack sized bags. This is also so much cheaper, especially if you use coupons.

Instead of buying snack cakes or muffins - Make your own. I just bought the cutest mini muffin pan. This weekend I am going to make some tiny muffins and cupcakes, bag them and stick them in the fridge for lunches this week. I purchased mixes for $1 and under.

Also try to find each child a good thermos for soups, pastas and flavored rices. I found the above blue thermos at a Thrift shop for 50 cents and it was immaculate inside. Then I found the yellow crayon one at WalMart on clearance for $1.25. My girls were taking Chicken noodles to school today.

What are your school lunch ideas?

Shopping Trip 9/9/08

Well I have to say I am quite excited about my first CVS/Walgreens shopping trip. I have just started saving the coupons so I didn't have too many coupons to redeem but I was pleased with the goodies I got.

1 4pack Kleenex $2.54 (clearance)
Paid $13.82 and received a $5 Target gift card

Since Iwas out shopping with my mom and sister I decided to see what I could find at CVS in their town.

CVS
5 Soft and Dri Pulse Deodorant $2.99 each (receive $2 Extra Care Buck per item limit 5)
1 Slim Fast CrispyPeanut Carmel Snack Bar on clearance for $1.25
Used my $8.99 ECB's from first CVS trip and paid $7.73 out of pocket.

Quick Lunches or After School Snacks

Last winter I quit buying can soup, unless I find that super unbelievable deal. I like to have soups and/or stews for a quick easy lunch while I am at home by myself. My oldest daughter loves to come home from school and pop a bowl of soup into the microwave for a quick healthy after school snack.

My solution: I make my own soup/stew. At least once a week I get out the crock and whip up something easy. I usually make it meatless which is cheaper and less calories. Sometimes I use a recipe and sometimes I just throw in the leftover veggies and spice it up.

This week my soup has 1 can chicken broth, some extra water for measure, carrots, peas, 1 can black beans drained and rinsed and a can of diced tomatoes with no salt. Carrots and peas are veggies I can't seem to eat if they arent' cooked in a soup with plenty of seasoning. So put all this in your crockpot, add plenty of garlic and pepper and let it go. I think I cooked on high for about 3 hours.

I then added up the total calories, divide it into 5 equal parts, put into sealed containers and put in in the fridge for easy access.

It ended up being not quite 60 cents per serving and only 160 calories; plus I am eating veggies I would normally never eat. This really helps on my weight loss journey!

Does Organizing Help You Save?

I think the answer is yes! I am not very good at being organized. I am going to show you inside my horrible kitchen cabinets, trust me when I say they are bad. LOL I spent my afternoon getting them organized. I found lots of duplicate items I didn't realize I had. I wouldn't have bought 3 Lawry's Seasoned Salts unless they were a super bargain. Yet I have 3 in my cabinet because I am sure I had no idea I had it every time I went to shop.

So I personally think that having my kitchen more organized will help me when making my shopping list and will in the long run help me save.

I don't have a whole lot of cabinet space, I only have two upper cabinets. Here is the first one before: It houses medicines we don't use often, spices, excess cleaning products, cups, and many other thingsI really can't find anything in there which is why I have multiple spices. I also found that I had 2 1/2 boxes of snack size zippered bags, and no it wasn't from a sale. After organizing here is what it looks like. It actually has more stuff in it now.

This next cabinet is under the sink and it is a terrible mess every thing just shoved underneath.

Here it is afterward, much more organized and I can actually see what is in there instead of just a big mess of things. This is the only cabinet that has less in it now that it has been cleaned out. All of the others actually have more stuff now. Once they were organized I found more room!

This is my second upper cabinet. It houses plates, some pans, skillets, bowls and a bunch of plastic containers.
Believe it or not, I actually found about 15 lids that no longer had plastic containers that went with them.
Last is my silverware drawer. I forgot to get a before picture. I hope I can make it stay this way
I do have other lower cabinets but I didn't get their picture. I have one that is for canned goods. and some more drawers. I have one that is completely empty due to it's location. I did get them all cleaned today and it was a job. Also I managed to throw out 3 trash bags full just from the cabinets and drawers.

Proctor and Gamble Brand Saver

This past Sunday our paper had a lot of good coupons. There was also a nice P&G insert with tons of coupons for the brands I love.

While going through this insert I found a website and decided to check it out. It's the Proctor and Gamble website and it features all of the brands that they produce. So instead of searching for coupons or samples you can go to this site check out the brands/products you love. Each product has it's website listed so you can just click and see if they have any coupons or samples. No google searching or trying to guess what the website name may be. There is also a spot called P&G Brand Saver that shows the most recent samples and coupons. Also the newest products on the market.

It also gives you a heads up when the next batch of P&G coupons is going in your Sunday paper. Check it out!
